Extracts were obtained from specific parts of the different plants. The researchers then took cultures of Madin-Darby Canine Kidney (MDCK) cells, which are cells from a cocker spaniel that are used for biological studies involving the kidneys. They induced damage on the MDCK cells by the administration of a hypertonic medium. This particular step was performed in the presence or absence of each of the 17 plant extracts’ maximal nontoxic concentrations. After 18 hours of treatment, the cells were examined to determine the cytoprotective and anti-apoptotic effects of the extracts. The researchers then looked at the effect of the treatment on the activity of caspases-3, -8, and -9, all of which play an important role in apoptosis.

After the test, the researchers identified Gaultheria hispidula and Abies balsamea as having the most potent cytoprotective and anti-apoptotic effects. The said extracts prevented apoptosis by blocking the activity of caspase-9 in the mitochondrial apoptotic signaling pathway.

Diets high in fat are known as major contributors to many health diseases, such as heart disease, and cancer. Researchers at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research in India discovered that taking curcumin supplements minimizes the damage caused by a high-fat diet.

In their study, the researchers looked at the beneficial effects of curcumin on inflammation, oxidative stress, and insulin resistance in high-fat-fed rats. They examined two groups of rats: one group fed with a high-fat diet only and another group given a high-fat diet with 200 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) body weight of curcumin every day for 10 weeks.

The researchers measured the rats’ food intake, body weight, and biochemical parameters at the start and the end of the study. After 10 weeks, they also measured the oxidative stress parameters in skeletal muscle and liver triglyceride levels.

The results revealed that the high-fat diet increased the body weight and liver fat. It also increased the levels of plasma glucose, insulin, insulin resistance, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and very low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (VLDL-c), and decreased high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

The high-fat diet also increased inflammation and oxidative stress in skeletal muscles. It also increased liver triglyceride content and caused fat buildup in the liver.

However, the supplementation with curcumin significantly improved these changes. Curcumin supplementation significantly reduced body weight, liver adipose tissue, glucose, insulin, and insulin resistance. In addition, it decreased plasma levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, VLDL-c, and inflammatory markers, and increased HDL cholesterol. Moreover, it reduced oxidative stress, hepatic triglyceride content, and liver fat deposition.

With these findings, the researchers concluded that curcumin could improve lipid levels, oxidative stress, inflammation, and insulin resistance caused by a high-fat diet.

The three most common chronic diseases were high cholesterol (48 %), arthritis (35 %) and hypertension (31 %). More participants used dietary supplements (72 %) while fewer individuals reported using mind-body practices (17 %) in the past twelve months. Over half of individuals reported missing any number of days from job or business due to illness or injury (53 %). Of those who had missed any days from work, 42 % missed one or two days, 36 % missed three to five days, and 23 % missed six days or more.

The authors concluded: Although nearly all individuals who practiced mind-body therapies reported being in good to excellent health, these individuals had a higher rate of absenteeism compared to non-users. Previous studies have shown that many individuals with chronic illness use CAM with the intent of alleviating the symptoms associated with chronic illness but this body of evidence is limited. Further studies are needed to examine the potential effects of these self-managed CAM therapies on the symptoms associated with chronic disease. Additionally, future studies should explore how managing these symptoms through the integration CAM therapies chronic disease management and employee programs could have a positive effect on absence from work, school, and other responsibilities.

How can these finding be interpreted?

The authors offer two possible explanations: Self-administered CAM practices may be more accessible to individuals with chronic disease regardless of socioeconomic status and other demographic factors. Alternatively, CAM use without the advisement of a practitioner may be harmful due to lack of knowledge on proper technique or dosage.

How about this interpretation, for instance: CAM-use and absenteeism have in common that they are the things that the ‘worried well’ tend to do. Two Ayurvedic medicines tested on rheumatoid arthritis patients

The clinical trial involved 60 patients with rheumatoid arthritis in the age range of 20 to 60 years, with many of them being 41 to 50 years of age. The majority of them (85 percent) were female. They were randomly divided into two groups of 30 participants.

The first group received daily doses of 2.5 grams of Bhallatakadi churna with guda, another Ayurvedic medicine recommended for treating Amavata. The second group was given 500 milligrams of Bhallatak guggul medicine, the primary target of this study.

The intervention period lasted for three months. Every 15 days, the researchers performed follow-ups on the participants.

At the end of the trial, the researchers analyzed the results of the Ayurvedic therapy based on the following criteria: body ache, loss of appetite, listlessness, heaviness of body and joint, thirst, fever, indigestion, and pain.

Participants also rated the pain, swelling, stiffness, and tenderness of their joints. Finally, the researchers measured the effects of either substance on the rheumatoid arthritis factor, the antiseptrolysin O titer, and C-reactive protein level of the patient.

Effects of Bhallatak guggul on Amavata considered to be statistically significant

The researchers found that Bhallatakadi churna with guda and Bhallatak guggul were both able to improve the primary symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Statistics-wise, the effect of the two Ayurvedic treatments were considered to be very significant.

The results on general symptoms – which included pain, stiffness, and tenderness of the joints – were also regarded as statistically significant. So were the effects of the trial medicines on the rheumatoid arthritis factor, the antiseptrolysin O titer, and C-reactive protein of patients.

The data matched the etiology of Amavata as described in the Ayurvedic classics. This supported the similarities between the description of this disease and the etiology of rheumatoid arthritis.

Bhallatak Guggulu is made up of four herbs: Haritaki, Bhallatak, Tila and Guda. Each herb played important roles in stopping the pathogenesis of Amavata, thereby alleviating the symptoms of the disease.

The researchers concluded that both Ayurvedic regimens were able to provide significant relief for patients with Amavata. However, patients who received Bhallatak Guggulu enjoyed faster and greater improvement of their symptoms when compared to the Bhallatakadi churna with guda treatment group.

Therefore, Bhallatak Gugguli was considered to be the superior Ayurvedic remedy for reducing the painful effects of rheumatoid arthritis.

5 Reasons Conventional Doctors Ignore Alternative Medicine


By now, you probably have come to realize that something is not quite right with the current health care system that dominates today. It has become a dictating, disease managing, and complicated mess that has generally left more people sick than healthy. Sure, it’s great for emergency and acute care, but when it comes to eradicating disease, it hasn’t even sniffed the coffee yet.

So when other options exist, such as alternative medicine, that have proven track records for helping people actually uproot the cause of their suffering, why has conventional medicine typically deemed it as quackery?

Closed Thinkers

The selection process of medicals students is primarily dependent on college grades, which simply means regurgitating what has been taught to them by presumed authorities. If they question this knowledge or authority, their grades typically suffer which will negatively affect their ability to land a job in their profession later.

Due to this system, a medical dogma is created that is incredibly hard to break and the very thought of thinking “outside the box” brings a level of cognitive dissonance and ridicule from peers that makes it nearly impossible for medical students and doctors to consider other options like alternative medicine.

Taught To Departmentalize

Medical schools tend to be organized into organ-specific departments. The idea that there may be an underlying link to disease originating in different areas of the body is not recognized in this type of framework. The body is treated as parts that are completely independent of each other with little bearing on each others function.

This makes diagnosis much easier when you don’t need to consider other areas that could complicate a diagnosis. It also makes it easier to slap a label on a patient, prescribe a medication, and send them on their way in 7 minutes or less.

So when alternative medicine considers more holistic factors that challenge departmentalization, it is a complete culture shock to departmentalized trained students, who can’t even fathom this “subordinate” system.

Economics

With abundant financial rewards in “rescue” medicine (interventions that treat symptoms), and much less monetary value in trying to prevent illness or correct it at the root (thereby losing a “customer”), it becomes very difficult for a medical student weighed down by academic debts to choose the latter.

Considering that the top 11 drug companies globally made almost 85 billion in profit in 2012, the thought of working for any other system seems implausible from an economics standpoint. Early indoctrination, huge debts, and a much more attractive financial reward system, makes alternative medicine an option that is rarely considered.

Nutrition Education Is Non-Existent

With medical schools so focussed on learning the intimate details of diagnosing and prescribing due to the profitability of such a system, the major factor for true health gets nearly completely ignored. That component is nutrition.

Doctors study nutrition for a few hours to a few days in what is a long and arduous degree. It is a mere fraction of what they learn, so if they do want such knowledge, they are on their own to get it. However, with such a profitable system in place that relatively ignores it, most do not go out of their way to learn this cornerstone of the alternative field.

Too Busy To Gain More Knowledge

Becoming a conventional doctor is a long and intense process of studying, testing, and working around the clock. This intense schedule often does not abate, and could get worse, depending on the doctors success and their location. As a result of increasing demands put on them by an ever growing sick population, continuing their education is often limited and often limited to events put on or sponsored by pharmaceutical companies.

This limits professional growth and keeps the doctor firmly inside the conventional system, not allowing them to expand their knowledge significantly into realms of alternative medicine, such as nutrition. As a result, they continue to learn more of the same and never are allowed to fully appreciate and understand the benefits of alternative and holistic practices.

I am happy to hear that there are some doctors currently in the system who understand the limits of conventional medicine, and as a result are incorporating forms of alternative medicine into their practice, in order to truly serve the needs of the people.

Fish oil shows promise in preventing psychosis .


Seven years after the end of a trial in which young people at severe risk of developing psychotic disorders were given fish oil tablets, most remain mentally healthy, a new study has found.

The study, presented today at the International Early Psychosis Conference in Japan, lends weight to the theory that concentrated fish oil, which contains omega-3 fatty acids, may help prevent the development of psychosis.

But more evidence is needed to confirm the results, say the international team of researchers including Professors Patrick McGorry and Paul Amminger of the Orygen Youth Health Research Centre at the University of Melbourne.

“If it’s true that omega-3 fatty acids prevent the onset of the likes of schizophrenia and psychosis, and the results are consistent with this belief, then it could be valuable replacement for anti-psychotic drugs during early intervention,” says McGorry.

“[However], omega-3 fatty acids appear to only work at the early warning stage, before the more advanced stages of illness develops,” he adds.

“Once it has developed, anti-psychotics are an essential component, along with cognitive behavioural therapy and other recovery orientated therapies.”

Previous research has found that people with schizophrenia, a severe form of psychosis, have low levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their cells.

Omega-3 fatty acids are a group of polyunsaturated fats that are present in a wide variety of foods, including ‘oily’ fish such as mackerel, salmon, tuna and sardines.

In the original trial, the researchers assessed the impact of a 12-week course of fish oil tablets on 81 young people aged between 13 and 25 who were assessed as being at high risk of developing a psychotic disorder.

Half took capsules containing concentrated marine fish oil (1.2 grams/day), while the other half took a placebo. They were periodically assessed for mental health changes over the following 40 weeks.

At the end of 12 months, 2 out of the 41 people who took fish oil developed psychosis while 11 in the placebo group developed a psychotic disorder.

The recent follow up research shows that seven years after the original trial, four of those who took fish oil capsules have developed a psychotic disorder, compared to 16 from the placebo group.

Those who took the fish oil capsules were also much better at dealing with challenges in their lives, while those who took the placebo tended to move into a psychotic stage more rapidly.

More trials

Scientists are unsure how omega-3 fatty acids work, but one theory suggests that it might increase a chemical called glutathione in the temporal lobes in the brain. Glutathione is a key antioxidant that exists in plant and animal cells. It helps prevent damage caused by destructive free radical molecules.

The anti-inflammatory properties of omega-3 fatty acids might also be important. They are also known to interact with dopamine and serotonin in the brain, which are both associated with mood.

“It might be a more general neuro-protective effect,” McGorry says. “We are also currently studying omega-3 fatty acids in relation to depression.”

Omega-3 fatty acids have also been shown to have very few side effects apart from nausea and diarrhoea, have good public acceptance, and are low cost, say the researchers.

But, while the new study shows promise, the researchers can’t confirm the results until two replica trials are analysed. They hope to release the results of these trials next April.
